From Scissors to Digitalisation
FIBEP (Fédération Internationale des Bureaux d´Extraits de Presse) is an international association of almost 100 media monitoring groups from 46 countries. Since 2002, NEWTON Media, a.s. has been the only Czech member of FIBEP.
FIBEP holds a congress once every 18 months; Prague was a host city in 2008. The workshops of this year’s anniversary meeting of FIBEP member organisations focused on copyright issues and relations with print media publishers, social network monitoring, digitalisation of media data, and new trends in this field.
Over the past 60 years media monitoring has experienced momentous change. From scissors and classic clipping services to electric scissors and automating binders to scanning and the introduction of OCR technologies right through to modern complex digital airflow, the field has gone a long way. Life is ever faster and so are requirements for the speed of media services. In the 1960s, monitoring outputs were printed and mailed to clients by post; their delivery often took as long as four days. But the modern-day customer wants information now, in real time so he can react without delay.
Argus de la Press, the world’s oldest media monitoring service, was established in 1879 in Paris. Its director, Mr Alexis Donot, is the fourth-generation successor to its founder. A modest clipping agency has evolved over the decades into an empire serving more than 10,000 customers and producing well over six million clippings from newspapers and magazines every year. In addition to press monitoring, it supplies also monitoring of television, radio, news agencies, websites and social networks. It provides also professional systems for PR specialists and media analysis.
